I feel like I somehow angered you . . . please allow me to explain. These are all very different issues. Not because I think they are, but because I have seen them all first-hand. Number 1 has to do with not challenging, promoting or utilizing good employees who truly care about the company and are upwardly mobile. Number 5 is about putting up with employees who don't care about the company, have no desire to climb the ladder, and have checked out entirely. And Number 4---the one I'm guessing you're actually upset about---stands on its own no matter what kind of article you put it into.

Also, your comment about hiring a friend or relative only being a problem "if the employee underperforms" is 100% incorrect. Friends and relatives can still disrupt company cultures, block other employees' career paths, participate in various levels of employee harassment, waste company resources, and create internal chaos . . . and STILL perform their assigned duties.

How are #s 1,4, and 5 really different? #1 is about not getting enough out of an employee, #4 is about hiring friends/relatives which is only really a problem if the employee underperforms, and #5 is about tolerating underperforming employees, which should have already been covered twice under points 1 & 4.
